Reading and Language Arts
In this section you will find what the students will be working on in the classroom in spelling, grammar, reading and writing. Spelling words will be listed as well as weekly vocabulary words. I will include stories that the students are reading from the textbooks. The Essential Questions for the week is the theme the stories follow. The high frequency words and oral vocabulary words are not words the scholars will be tested on however they are words that they should be familar with from the stories read in class.
March 26-30 Unit 5, Week 5 Essential Question: Why are rules important?
Spelling List- dead, ahead, lead, thread, bread, breath, touch, trouble, gym, myth, small, chalk, instead, whole, words
Grammar Skills- This unit focuses on the short vowels sound when spelling with 'ea', 'y', 'ou', and 'au' (ex. steady, crystal, trouble, cause). Students will practice writing and correcting pronoun-verb ageement in sentences. Students will also review how a book title needs to be written. Students will review and identify words with multiple meanings.
Reading- Students will continue making predictions while reading a story. Students will review and identify cause and effect in a reading selection. Students will also review and work with sequencing within text. The stories in this unit are expository text, which means the stories give facts and information about a topic.
Reading/Writing Workshop book stories will be "Visiting the Past" (pages 390-393).
Literature Anthology book stories will be "Setting the Rules" (pages 480-483) and "American Symbols" (pages 484-485).

April 2-6 Unit 6, Week 1 Essential Question: What do myths help us umderstand about plants?
Spelling List- pencil, magnet, publish, supper, letter, lady, gravy, solo, open, odor, lead, touch, door, front, someone
Grammar Skills- Students will be able to identify and use adjectives. Students will review using commas when they are writing more than two words in a list. Students will review compound words.
Reading- Students will read the stories from both the Reading/Writing Workshop and Literature Anthology book. Students will be discussing and practicing the skill of rereading for understanding. Students will review identifying the theme of a story. Students will learn and discuss what makes a story a myth. Students will continue working with context clues.
Reading/Writing Workshop book stories will be: "Why Fir Tree Keeps His Leaves" (pages 406-409).
Literature Anthology book stories will be: "The Golden Flower" (pages 486-507) and "A Pumpkin Plant" (pages 508-511).

April 9-13 Unit 6, Week 2 Essential Question: How do we use energy?
Spelling List- state, replace, nine, ninety, side, sidewalk, face, outside, these, tadpole, letter, magnet, alone, beside, round
Grammar Skills- Students will be working with proper nouns, and how they begin with a capital letter. Students will learn that there are special adjectives that are referred to as articles such as; a, an, the, this, that, these and those. Students will be able to model how each article is used appropriately in sentences. Students will reviewing identifying and working with prefixes and suffixes. Students will also review synonyms and antonyms.
Reading- Students will continue practicing rereading parts of a story, or the whole story to have a better understanding. Students will review and be able to identify the author's purpose when reading a story. Students will also review cause and effect in a text. The stories in this unit are expository text, and the students will need to know that means that each story gives facts and information about a topic.
Reading/Writing Workshop book stories will be: "Pedal Power" (pages 420-423).
Literature Anthology book stories will be: "My Light" (pages 512-530) and "The Power of Water" (pages 532-535).

April 16-20 Unit 6, Week 3 Essential Question: Why is teamwork important?
Spelling List- lit, little, set, settle, rip, ripple, pad, paddle, middle, bubble, outside, replace, follow, listen, something
Grammar Skills- Students will be working with adjectives that compare two nouns. These adjectives will have the endings 'er'. Students will also review and practice working with possessive nouns, and how they need to have an apostrophe to show the ownership.
Reading- Students will review and practice the skill of summarizing a reading selection. Students will be able to identify the main idea and key details about a topic or in a reading selection. The stories in this unit is also considered expository text. Students will learn abour greek and latin roots which can help the students have an understanding of new or unfamiliar words.
Reading/Writing Workshop book stories will be: "Dive Teams" (pages 434-437).
Literature Anthology book stories will be: "Astronaut Handbook" (pages 536-553) and "Teamwork to the Top" (pages 554-555).

April 23-27 Unit 6, Week 4 Essential Question: How do we use money?

Grammar Skills- In this unit the students will identify and practice working with adverbs and prepositional phrases. Students will also be practicing with capitalization of proper nouns and the word 'I'. Students will be working with the comparative endings 'er' and 'est'.
Reading- Students will be practicing summarizing a story to help them remember what was read. Students will be able to identify the problem and solution in a text. The stories in this unit are expository text. Students will practice using paragraph clues to help figure out the meaning of new words.
Reading/Writing Workshop book stories will be: "The Life of a Dollar Bill" (pages 448-451).
Literature Anthology book stories will be: "Money Madness" (pages 556-575) and "King Midas and the Golden Touch" (pages 576-577).

April 30-May 4 Unit 6, Week 5 Essential Question: Where can your imagination take you?
Spelling List- jumper, higher, star, starry, garden, better, dinner, doctor, market, hairy, enjoy, display, afternoon, anyone, everything
Grammar Skills- This unit will work with adjectives and adverbs. Students will be able to identify each of them and be able to understand the difference. Students will also practice proper sentence punctuation. Students will be able to identify and explain metaphors.
Reading- Students will be reading rhyming poems which means the poems will consist of words with the same sound at the end of the lines, has regular repeating rhythm while explaining the poets thoughts and feelings. Students will be able to describe the point of view used in the reading.
Reading/Writing Workshop book poems will me "A Box of Crayons", "What Story is This?", and "The Ticket" (pages 462-465).
Literature Anthology book poems will be "I've Got This Covered" and "Eating While Reading" (pages 578-581) and "Clay Play" and "Crayons" (pages 582-583).

Math
In this section you will find what mathematical skills the class is currently working on.
The students will have some content review such as working with money, time and place value. Each skills be developed further. For example, students will be asked to identify time in 15 minute intervals. Students will need practice 100s, 10s, and 1s place value.
Science
Students have begun working with their classroom AMSTI kits; this unit is based on Rocks, Soils and Silt. Students will be able to complete hands on activites in the classroom in pairs or small groups. Then the students will be expected to complete a Science Notebook entry based on the activities and observations completed in the classroom.
Please encourage your child to have appropriate classroom behavior because no student who is exhibiting inappropriate behavior will be allowed to participate in the experiments which will make the Science Notebook responses difficult to complete.
Social Studies
Students have completed their Liberty Legacy program and chose Ms. Miller as their super citizen for the year. Students enjoyed the program and will periodically review the subject content.
Students have completed some work on a few important people for Black History such as Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman.
Homework
Each week the students will be tested on the unit spelling words and vocabulary words. That practice will be the bulk of their homework assignments. Follow the unit dates to find the correct spelling and vocabulary list. Additional homework may be added when work is not completed in the classroom as needed, or additional practice in preparation for an upcoming assessment. Please check the weekly newsletter that goes home at the beginning of each new unit. The homework packets will last about a week, and then updated each time a new unit has started.
- Students are expected to write their spelling words 3x each and study vocabulary words.
- Students are asked to write their spelling words in ABC order and study vocabulary words.
- Students need to choose 10 of their spelling words and write them in a sentence.
- Study for Vocabulary test and practice the unit grammar skills.
***Students are to study spelling and vocabulary words every night in preparation for the weekly tests.***
